Museum Bank Indonesia and the flow of information

Characteristics of Monetary Museum

In general collections of monetary museum consist of historical data and information on monetary, banking and payment system polices, numismatic and historical objects and artifacts, which are different from other museums.

For example Museum Bank Indonesia  that holds information on historical data and information on monetary, banking and payment system policies which are provided on panels, and e-kiosk.  Diorama is also displayed to depict the real situation of banking activities, and numismatic which exhibits a number of money collection from era of pre-history up to present time. Museum Bank Indonesia applies high technology to ease public in seeking information, and to attract public to visit the Museum.

The reason of displaying the above information and collection lies on the Bank Indonesia concerns to disseminate information for public, as well as to preserve historical objects and collections.  As the purpose of developing the Museum to disseminate information, the Museum focuses  on  managing information on history of BI policies.

 

How do we manage information

As Museum Bank Indonesia provides information, managing information is important, as several steps taken below :

·                Application of technology enabling  museum visitors easy to seek information

·                Providing education programme for public 

Writing information clearly and displaying into interesting media to attract public.

·                Involving historian and universities in museum research.

In line with the above focus, the mission of Museum Bank Indonesia (MBI) is to provide by employing effective information technology, an interactive educational facility for the public about :

Functions and roles of BI in time perspective;

A preserved cultural building owned by BI with collectibles and memorabilia connected to the history of BI, including its conservation efforts;

Science of economics, monetary and banking that is of interest to the local society

Meanwhile, the vision is to be a trustworthy, informative, modern, and professional source of information about the history of the central bank of Indonesia.

 

Preventing brain drains and succession of professionals

The Museum staff that are currently assigned have acquired competencies and experiences in various field such as history of the central bank and policies on monetary, banking and payment system.  Specific expertise is also required such as numismatist and curator, as well as marketing and public relations.

Expertise of museum is highly required as the Museum is a specific non profitable  business.  As the number of museum expertise is slight, the possibility of having expertise to resign from the museum is high.  Thus, strategic steps shall be considered as follows :

·       Providing attractive bonus and salaries

·       Developing good communication among superior, subordinates, and peers

·       Giving an opportunity to self development in terms of training, workshops, seminars

 

Succession of Professionals

Maintaining professionals at the Museum is important.  Because of this, in the future Museum Bank Indonesia has prepared the organization of the Museun in which a clear  level of jobs have been determined.   To sustain the succession programme, the Museum will build a co-operation with universities in conducting research on the museum.

 

Setting up Rules for International

In setting up rules for international peer reviews below are some suggestions :

·                Requiring the monetary  museums to have a Service Level Agreement to serve public

·       The monetary museum shall contain collections information on policies,  objects artifacts relating to  bank.

·       Requiring the monetary museum to maintain the standard of managing collections including : registration, storing which shall meet international rules and regulations. 

·       Entailing the Museum staff such as  curator, historian, museum guide to hold university background in   museum.

The above standards shall be set out by  ICOMON as the authorized body, so all museum have the same standards. .

 

Saving Numismatic Sciences

In order to save numismatic sciences, below are some steps to be considered :

·       Propose to the government that the museum subject is to be one of the subjects taught in the museum.

·       Conduct seminars to disseminate information for public.

·       Introduce numismatic science to students at school as one of the extra curriculum activity.

Conduct sosialisation programme on numismatic for students visiting the Museum.

 

Building Networking

The Monetary Museum shall build a good relationship with its stakeholders.  The Museum stakeholders are varied such as :

Universities :

The museum can consider conducting a joint research with universities.  This can be a constructive co-operation between the museum and universities in which the museum provides funds whereas the universities undertake research and come up with innovation and recommendation to improve the museum.

Banks :

The museum can consider taking some programmes as follows :

·       inquire banks to put the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programmes in their  annual plan. 

·       Ask the banks for providing a soft loan to museums, which will enable the museum to develop its human resources.

·       As the banks to provide scholarship for talented university student.

Government :

The museum can consider taking the following actions :

·       inquire the government to grant a tax incentive for the museums

·       propose  the minister of education to enforce  schools to put the museum subject in their curriculum

Private companies :

The museum can initiate a public-private partnership with some private companies, in terms of funding the museum operational.

 

Conclusion

·       Museum Bank Indonesia is different from other museums, in terms of collections of numismatic and information, technology applied, and competencies on monetary policy historian, numismatist.

·       Because Museum Bank Indonesia is the information museum it focuses on managing information.

       Preventing brain drain can be carried out by providing attractive bonus and salaries, developing good communication among superior, subordinates, and peers and giving an opportunity to self development in terms of training, workshops, seminars.

·       Setting up rules and regulation to maintain the same standard among the monetary museum shall be determined by  ICOMON including : managing information and collection standard,  the qualification of human resources.

·       Building networking and co-operation with universities can be conducted to sustain succession of professional program and to save numismatic science.
